How to prepare furniture for storage
With proper preparation, storage furniture holds up for months or years without damage. A few simple steps protect wood, fabric and anything fragile:
- Dismantle beds, wardrobes, shelving and any drawers to save floor space and reduce strain on joints and panels
- Clean furniture thoroughly first, since dust and spills left behind are what usually cause mould
- Plastic traps moisture against different materials in different ways, so wrap wooden furniture and upholstery in breathable fabric or moving blankets instead
- Wrap glass, mirrors and ceramic decorative items in bubble wrap, then a blanket on top
- Raise beds, cabinets and drawers slightly off the floor to protect furniture from rising damp
- Photograph and note the value of valuable items before storage, in case you need to claim

Cost depends mainly on unit size, location and how long you need it for, particularly whether you're in central or outer London. The capital is the UK's most expensive region for self storage, and furniture storage costs are usually quoted per square foot, with central areas costing more than outer boroughs.
At HOLD's London facilities, prices start from £95.30 a month inc VAT, rising with size. Long term storage, six months or more, usually costs less overall than a short monthly rolling contract, so ask about a longer-term rate rather than the standard weekly cost.
Often, yes, especially for a temporary need like a move, renovation or house sale. Self storage units usually cost less than renting a larger home just to fit everything in, and less than getting rid of furniture and buying it again later. Short-term storage is a lot cheaper than either of those as a fix for what's usually a short-term problem.
A single sofa usually fits in a 50 square foot storage unit, alongside a few other pieces from the same room. If you're storing a whole living room's worth of furniture, size up rather than fitting everything into the smallest option.

Not as a separate product. Climate control usually means active machinery that regulates temperature and humidity. HOLD units keep conditions stable year-round without that separate equipment or cost. For most household furniture (including some antiques) that's enough protection without extra climate control.
You can't store anything illegal, hazardous, or perishable. This includes firearms, explosives, drugs, flammable materials, food, and living things. Most facilities also prohibit vehicles stored outside a unit.

Store furniture only once it's completely clean and dry, since leftover dust or damp usually causes mould once a unit is closed up.
