Clear the space for the build and keep everything safe until it's done.
Access isn't tied to office hours. Our London facilities give you 24/7 PIN entry, so you can load and unload around trade visits and delivery windows
For a renovation, it comes down to a portable container on your driveway, or a self storage unit off-site. If you don't have the space for a container, need the property cleared completely, or want the cheaper option month to month, self storage usually wins.

FLEXIBLE TERMS
Renovations run over. Storage is billed monthly with no long-term lease, so an unrealistic finish date doesn't cost you anything.

SECURE BY DESIGN
Every unit is individually alarmed, with 24-hour CCTV and PIN-controlled access across the facility.

SPACE THAT SCALES
HOLD makes it easy to size up or down as the job changes. Units run from around 25 sq ft for a single room up to 100 sq ft or more for a whole-house projec
Container or storage unit? The honest trade-off
Neither option is perfect, and the right one depends on what you're dealing with.
A container on your driveway means no driving and no van. You load it at your own pace, and it's right there when you need something back. The trade-off is it needs space you might not have, and most providers charge extra for delivery and collection.
A self storage unit usually costs less per month and clears the property completely. That matters if trades need the space a container would otherwise sit in, or if there's simply nowhere on site to put one. You'll need to get things there yourself, and unlike a container, it won't be sitting on your doorstep if you need something mid-build.
If you've got driveway space and want convenience, go with a container. If you don't, or you're after the cheaper option, self storage is the better fit.

How to protect your furniture during a renovation
- Disassemble large furniture to save space and keep it safe in transit
- Use sturdy boxes for smaller items, not bin bags or loose piles
- Label every box by room to save time unpacking afterwards
- Wrap upholstery, wood and mirrors in blankets or bubble wrap before they move
- Keep everything off the floor, ideally on a pallet or a stack of bricks
- Keep electronics, artwork and anything delicate away from the unit entrance
During a renovation, dust and knocks cause more damage to furniture than moving it ever does. A bit of prep before it leaves the house is what keeps it in one piece, and that starts with having the right boxes and wrapping ready before you need them. HOLD's Box Shop stocks all of it online, with click and collect if you'd rather pick up than wait on a delivery.

How much space each renovation type needs
Different renovations clear the house in different ways.
Kitchen remodel: cabinets, appliances if they're being replaced, and everything that was living in the cupboards. A 25-50 sq ft unit usually covers a standard kitchen, more if white goods are staying in storage until the new ones are fitted.
Bathroom refit: the smallest clearance of the five, usually just towels, cabinet contents and any furniture in the room. A 25 sq ft unit is often enough on its own.
Flooring: everything needs to come off the floor across every affected room, furniture as well as rugs and smaller items. Size depends on how many rooms are involved. There's no fixed size for this one. It scales with the job.
Full gut: most of the house needs clearing at once. This is where 100 sq ft or more comes in, sometimes split across more than one unit if the timeline means different rooms come out at different points.
Loft or attic conversion: whatever was stored up there has to come down first, on top of anything else the build pushes out of other rooms. Often underestimated on size, since loft contents plus that displaced furniture add up faster than people expect.
How long each of these takes depends on the job and your trades, which is why nothing here is on a fixed term.

What our customers say
faqs
There's no long-term lease, and storage runs on a rolling monthly basis for as long as your renovation takes. Short-term bookings need to meet a £70 minimum spend, but beyond that you give written notice when you're ready to move out and stop paying from there.
Yes. Units are individually alarmed and access is controlled by personal PIN, with CCTV running across the facility around the clock.
Yes. Most UK storage facilities, including HOLD, require your belongings to be covered for their replacement value while in storage. At HOLD, you can opt for StoreProtect, an enhanced liability scheme charged based on the declared replacement value of your belongings.
As well as furniture and boxes, units are used to hold tools, building materials and equipment, and to store new fixtures securely before installation.
